Hawking Radiation: The Phenomenon of Black Hole Evaporation Black holes are some of the most mysterious and fascinating objects in the universe. They are formed when a massive star collapses under its own gravitational pull, creating a region of space where not even light can escape . However, in 1974, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking proposed a theory that black holes could actually emit radiation, known as Hawking radiation. According to this theory, black holes are not completely black , but instead emit particles due to quantum mechanics. The radiation is thought to be caused by the creation of virtual particle-antiparticle pairs near the event horizon, the boundary of a black hole beyond which not even light can escape . One of the particles may escape into space, while the other is pulled into the black hole, resulting in a loss of energy and mass for the black hole.
